Do Drug Dogs Smell CBD Oil or CBD Products?

Training Dogs to Find Drugs
Many breeds of dogs are extremely intelligent and can be taught to do a wide variety of things. Combine that with the fact that dogs have 100,000 times more scent identification than humans do and it’s not hard to believe that dogs can be taught to smell anything.

When these dogs are being trained, they go through a long and rigorous process so they can consistently follow orders and find what they are trained to be looking for.

One of the most effective ways to train these animals is to hide the dog’s favorite toys with specific drugs and they begin to associate the smell with the toy. Once they are out in the real world, they will track down these smells due to the strong association.

Do Drug Dogs Smell CBD Oil?
Knowing what we know about their training, we know that all drug dogs would need is to be trained to smell CBD to find it.

Here is the thing, CBD in its isolate form has no odor. It’s a fine white powder.

When dogs are trained to find cannabis products, they are actually trained to find the scent of certain terpenes that are common in cannabis.

Terpenes such as beta-caryophyllene and Myrcene are what give cannabis its odor and are what dogs will smell.

So, the likelihood that a drug dog will smell your CBD product varies on what type of product you are taking.

Full Spectrum CBD
This is the most likely to get detected. Full Spectrum CBD has all the of terpenes and cannabinoids found in the hemp plant in the final oil or product. This means that all the smells will be there too.

Many manufacturers of CBD have added other smells and flavors to their oils and edible products that can mask the traditional cannabis (terpene) smell, but that doesn’t mean drug sniffing dogs won’t smell through the ruse.

CBD Products with 0% THC
For the question of “do drug dogs smell CBD” the 0% THC variations aren’t going to be any different than the Full Spectrum products. THC, like CBD, is not what the dogs will be searching for, so its removal doesn’t help.
If you want to be 100% sure that a drug sniffing dog will not find your CBD product, the safe bet is CBD Isolate.

CBD Isolate
CBD Isolate comes in an odorless, tasteless fine white powder that resembles floor in many ways. Because the terpenes and other plant matter has been removed, there is nothing for a drug dog to smell to identify the product for what it is.
