Dry herb vaporizers and medical cannabis: What you need to know

The cannabis industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the world, and is expected to continue growing as more states and countries legalize the use of this plant. One of the effects of this is that the more the industry grows, the more products will be available.

At the moment, and in every sector of this industry, there are already numerous products available, and one of the most popular that patients use is the dry herb vaporizer.  At the same time, many consumers are not sure what they are, what they do, or how to use them properly.

For those who would like to learn more, here is helpful information that you may find beneficial regarding medical cannabis and dry herb vaporizers.

What are dry herb vaporizers and how are they different?

Dry herb vaporizers have come a long way from when they were first developed in 1994 by Eagle Bill Amato. Today, the market is full of them, and they all come in different shapes, sizes, colors and types.

A dry herb vaporizer is essentially a device that allows users to heat cannabis without using combustion (open flames), and using two heating methods. Once the cannabis has been heated, it creates a vapor, which contains the cannabinoids of the plant, and as such, the user experiences the same effects as they would if they were smoking the cannabis plant via joint (cannabis cigarette, pipe, etc).

There are many different types of dry herb vaporizers, and most are available in physical stores, or through online retailers like MagicVaporizers, such as portable vaporizers like the Crafty Vaporizer, or desktop vaporizers, which are much larger and are required to be plugged in to use.

What makes them healthier?

As mentioned above, dry herb vaporizers use two different heating methods to create vapor from the cannabis plant. To explain how it is healthier, it is best to first explain what makes traditional methods of smoking cannabis unhealthy.

Traditional methods of consuming cannabis (marijuana), such as using a bong, joint or blunt, need to use combustion to heat the plant. When cannabis is heated using combustion, it exceeds a certain temperature, and when that happens, harmful toxins and carcinogens are created, which when inhaled, and can be bad for the body/throat/lungs.

Dry herb vaporizers use convection and conduction as the heating methods, and the temperature can be controlled, and is far below the temperature that creates harmful effects. The convection method of heating is similar to that of an oven; warm air circulates the plant matter until it is vaporized. The conduction heating method is similar to that of a pan on a stove; the surface on which the cannabis is placed inside the chamber is heated, and through contact, the cannabis is vaporized once a certain temperature is reached.

Benefits of using a dry herb vaporizer

Aside from the health benefits that are gained when using a dry herb vaporizer, there are other benefits too that many users enjoy. This is what has made the dry herb vaporizer such a popular product for those who were looking for an alternative method of consumption.

One of the biggest benefits is how efficient and convenient they are, owing to their small size. Traditional methods of consuming cannabis would have a user carry around their product, rolling paper, a pipe, a grinder, and a method to create combustion. Dry herb vaporizers on the other hand only need pre-grinded cannabis, and the user to press the button to activate the device. They can be carried around anywhere and can fit into any pocket, as well as providing users with the ability to be discreet.

More than that, the vapor created doesn’t stick to fabric or surfaces, so there is no smell that remains for longer than 20 or so minutes and allows users to vape wherever they are or need to.

How to clean a dry herb vaporizer

Dry herb vaporizers are relatively easy to clean, due to the fact that they only have a few parts, namely; a battery, the chamber where the cannabis plant is placed, and a mouthpiece which is used to draw the vapor. Each of these parts should be cleaned, and the process is quite simple.

The first step to cleaning the device is to take it apart, so it is advised to check the manual to see how to remove each individual part so that nothing is damaged. Once the device has been disassembled, the mouthpiece should be cleaned with either a small brush or Q-tip; this is done to clear any loose herb and to clear the vapor path, then it can be wiped down with alcohol wipes.

The second step is to use a small brush to clear out the chamber where the cannabis is placed, and should be done above something soft in case the device is dropped. Any loose cannabis or material should be removed, and any residue should be wiped away.

Lastly, the battery should be inspected to make sure that there is no residue on it that could interfere with the connection or heating elements.

How to use a dry herb vaporizer

Using a dry herb vaporizer is also quite a simple process but does require a few things to be done first in order to get the best experience. The first step is to ensure that the device is fully charged and working properly; this can be done by pressing the temperature buttons to ensure they work, and it is advised to heat it a few times to remove any residue from packaging.

The second step is to grind the cannabis properly, which requires some practice. Good quality cannabis should not be old, as it will turn into powder when grinded, which is not good for the device, and won’t be a pleasurable experience, as well as the fact that potency will be lost.

The cannabis after grinding should be medium, not too fine in other words, and sticky, but not so sticky that it leaves residue on your fingers. The grinded cannabis then needs to be packed into the chamber, not too tightly as this will affect the draw, and it will constrict the vapor path, as well as causing some of it to be potentially not heated.

We hope this has been helpful.  Please let us know if you have any questions.

Wishing you health and wellness.
