Anti-riot Police in Kenya have fired tear-gas into a crowd of students mourning the deaths of people killed last week in a pro-democracy protest march.

Today’s (Monday’s) incident involved students from the Kenya Polytechnic.

Trouble started when a group of students marched from the campus, which is near the national police headquarters, and were confronted by anti-riot police.

In the ensuing clashes, the students set two vehicles ablaze and blocked the street with burning tyres before they retreated back to the campus

On July 7, anti-riot police beat up people attempting to attend reformists rallies in seven Kenyan towns, including the capital, Nairobi.

At least nine people were killed.

President Daniel arap Moi’s government was severely criticised locally and internationally for the excessive force police used against unarmed demonstrators.

The same day police also fired tear gas canisters into Nairobi’s All Saints Cathedral and then entered to club demonstrators who had taken refuge there.

Demands by opposition, students and clergy for constitutional reforms gathered strength in April after President Daniel arap Moi confirmed that presidential, legislative and municipal elections would be held this year.

An election date has still not been set.

22 countries, including European Union members, the United States and Japan, have pressed Moi to make reforms.

Opposition politicians have vowed to ensure the general elections are not held unless laws they say favour Moi and his ruling Kenya African National Union party are changed.

The laws date from British colonial rule and restrict freedom of assembly and association.

“So we want a change. The education system must be reorganised. It must be done.”

The reformists, who are agitating through the National Convention Assembly — a grouping of clerics, civic and human rights group — say the laws are only used against the opposition.
