According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, throughout the early 2010’s the rate of cannabis use for those aged 15–64 was estimated to be between 2.9 and 4.3% worldwide. In Canada, the nation with the highest levels of cannabis use on earth, reports suggest that up to 1 in 5 pregnant women use cannabis as a therapeutic aid for ailments associated with pregnancy, including nausea and vomiting, and as a sleep aid. But how does cannabis affect the developing offspring?
Until recently, a dearth of research has been available to examine the effects of prenatal cannabis exposure. In part due to the illegality of cannabis, many are hesitant confirm cannabis use during pregnancy. However, in recent years, several studies have shed light on some of the potential abnormal neurodevelopmental outcomes.
On tonight’s live stream, newly minted Master of Science Gregory Robinson joins us to discuss his research into the effects of cannabis on impaired development of offspring, and some of the nuances of the model he uses in research.
