After we talked last week about chronic pain and CBD hemp oil as something that could be a benefit to someone suffering, I thought we needed to follow-up on that topic. After asking some experts in the field here in Kentucky, they pointed me to Josh Hendrix. Josh is the President of Hendrix Hemp, a licensed hemp producer that manages the cultivation of hemp on his family’s farm in Mount Sterling, KY. He also founded the Kentucky Hemp Industries Association and still serves on the Board of Directors. On top of all that, he is the Director of Business Development-Domestic Production for CV Sciences, Inc. Josh is a leader here in Kentucky in the industry and is helping my state lead the country in hemp production.

In this episode, we begin talking about the history of hemp in the United States. Hemp was a leading crop in the country until the 1930’s when two forces made it disappear, one political and one economical. After a brief comeback in World War II, the production was halted again. In the last few years, however, hemp is showing itself to be a viable crop once again.

Kentucky is taking the lead in bringing back industrial hemp. Before the government destroyed the crops after WWII, Kentucky was the leading producer in the United States. Since the passage of the Agricultural Act of 2014, the state has slowly began rebuilding an infrastructure to product hemp in mass. I personally thought Kentucky was going too slow in bringing forward hemp, but Josh explains why growing quality hemp wasn’t as easy as just planting seeds and letting it grow. It’s going to take some time, but if the crops are allowed to continue to grow, each year more and more hemp will be produced and the future looks bright.
