What is CBD?
CBD stands for cannabidiol and is a cannabinoid found largely in hemp! A cannabinoid is a group of chemical compounds that interact with cannabinoid receptors all over the brain and body. The most well-known cannabinoid is THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), but CBD has become quite popular and cannabis alone contains 113 known cannabinoids. These are phytocannabinoids, meaning they are found in plants, rather than endocannabinoids which are made in our bodies. When consumed, phytocannabinoids like CBD can have profound effects; both physical and psychological. They are mini messengers for our next subject: The Endocannabinoid System.
How does CBD work?
In each of us lies a lesser-known system: Yes, the Endocannabinoid System or ECS. Discovered in the late 80s, while scientists were trying to understand the effects of cannabis, research tells us that this system can provide homeostasis – or balance – to our entire network of systems! It leaps into action to help us adapt and change in response to what’s going on inside or outside of us.
