How do Vape Pens Work?

Vape pens are one of the most popular devices when it comes to dry herb, wax, and oil concentrate consumption. Surpassing the number of smokers and desktop vape users, vape pens are the most convenient types of vapes employed by beginners and seasoned users alike.

Vape enthusiasts the world over agree that vape pens are versatile, stealth, convenient, and affordable. With so many vape pens on the market, it quickly becomes overwhelming to differentiate between them and their respective modalities. The key is to find what works for you by determining your preferences.

However, many new consumers come into the vape space not knowing how vaporizer pens work nor what to look for. In this article we will examine how some of the most popular vaporizers work, and why you may want to own them.

How Dry Herb Vaporizers Work

These are the vaporizers most start with first, especially if the user is transitioning from smoking. Perfect for beginners, dry herb vaporizers like the E-CLIPSE and AGO are fine examples of modern dry herb vaporizers for cannabis.

Cannabis vaporizer pens may function a bit differently from one another. The AGO Vaporizer for example, is a combustion vape. Consumption vapes are ideal for those who are coming from the world of smoking, as they allow an easy transition to the vaporizing scene. These are very straightforward to operate.  Basically, filling the chamber with cannabis flower and turning the unit on as you take a draw operates the heating coil. This ignites the heating of the flower without the use of a lighter. Known as a combustion vape, the AGO can also be used as a convection vaporizer by simply inserting a glass screen to produce vapor.

Other dry herb vaporizers that do not utilize combustion are known as “convection vapes”. The E-CLIPSE and Titan 2 are all examples of convection cannabis vaporizers. These work by gently heating up the flower to a pre-selected temperature.  This heat releases the volatile compounds within the herb to produce vapors. Unless your vaporizer is a 3 in 1, the majority of atomizers on dry herb vape pens will not be detachable. These types of vaporizers will require regular maintenance than the others to prevent residual buildup in the chamber.

How Wax Vape Pens Work

Depending on the brand and model of the wax pen you have, most vaporizers in this category are easily loaded onto the heating coil via a dabber. Most wax vaporizer pens come with preset heating options and variable voltage settings for your preferred method of vaporization.

By having the wax sitting on top of the coil, heat quickly vaporizes the wax which produces a thicker cloud than cannabis flower vapes. Quartz coils are common heating elements in this type of vaporizer and are often the most popular among vaporizing enthusiasts.  This is due to their reliability. Their design streamlines the sessions by providing you with certain options which allow you to achieve the experience desired or required. The universal threading for any one of these types of vaporizers will be the 510 threaded battery. These are great for 3rd party attachments or replacements as well.  Since the threading is so common, it is not unusual to encounter vaporizers which are completely customized using alternate components. Still, it is highly advised to utilize parts that correspond to your model of vaporizer to avoid compatibility issues.

Vaporizers like the Yocan Evolve and Steamcloud Box Mod are good examples of wax vaporizers, since the AGO vape can also use wax concentrates. Once your atomizer is emptied of wax or shatter, you can simply store the unit away until the next use. The main area of consistent maintenance for a vaporizer like this will always be the mouthpiece.

How Oil Vape Pens Work

The good thing about an oil vaporizer pen is its ability to vaporize THC oil concentrates. This is mainly due to the similar viscosity associated with these substances. The versatility of an oil vaporizer pen makes this one of the most popular options in the world of vaporization.

Thick smoke clouds are often associated with this type of device. Some oil vaporizer pens use a wick in their detachable atomizer, while others have their heating coils inside the chamber. Depending on your model of vaporizer, these tanks can be interchangeable and refilled. Simply drop in the THC oil of your choice into the tank, initiate the power by either the push of a button or by inhaling. You will be happy to learn that some of the vaporizers already mentioned on this list, such as the SteamCloud Mini 2.0 are also capable of THC oil concentrate usage.

Simply switch out the oil cartridge, and you are able to alternate between your preferred vaping modalities. One tip to keep in mind when using an oil vaporizer is to always keep the unit upright to prevent the oil from spilling back. Like wax vaporizers, these will only need regular maintenance around the mouthpiece.

Which Vape Pen is Right for Me?

Whether you want to be out and about puffing big clouds or privately consuming with a couple of stealth draws all depend on personal preference. Some people choose to have more control over their sessions with precision temperature settings, while others want a simplified experience with preset modes.

If you are new to the world of vaporizing or simply wish to try it, you can always select a dry herb vaporizer for cannabis. These are perfect for capturing a full flavor profile while providing a light and wispy vapor. Those with more experience can opt for a 3 in 1 vaporizer or even an oil vaporizer pen. As discussed, they are simple to operate and take very little time to master.

Combustion vaporizers like the AGO are by the far the best option for heavy smokers or those wanting to wean off smoking gradually before plunging head on into the vaporizing scene. By inserting a glass screen onto the chamber, you can convert the AGO into a convection vaporizer and gradually ease your way into vaping.

By then you can move onto other vaporizers which provide more options and functionality.
